The Making Of "Eddie's Guide To Gwenpool"

Making a blog post is difficult, and today, you'll see how hard it was to make my magnum opus and biggest comic book review yet, my retrospective for The Unbelievable Gwenpool.

PRE-PRODUCTION AND BUDGET:

As mentioned in the post, I found out who Gwenpool was because I had a copy of issue 4, but I'm gonna be honest, I think I saw her somewhere else prior to that, probably some shitty YouTube video about Marvel? Lego Marvel Superheroes 2? I don't remember. Still, I became a fan of this book, and I saw that this is one of the many comics that people bond over to talk about how good it was.

I didn't know that I wanted to write this post until prior to April of 2024, when I was thinking of comic books to review for my birthday and I thought "Yes, I should look at that one comic about the white girl from Marvel! That one was a classic!". Originally, it was gonna be titled "The Comics That Changed Me", and it was gonna have the very first comics I had ever read. I scrapped that in favor of Random Hour 3, but I still wanted to do it.

I scrapped the idea for reviewing multiple series a few months later, but I still wanted to review Gwenpool, and I thought the perfect time to do it was June 17, 2024, the 9th anniversary of Deadpool's Secret Secret Wars #2... But the date had already passed, and so had Issue 0's release date anniversary, and so had Issue 1's release date... FUCK, Guess I gotta wait to write it til NEXT year... But why wait to write something for next year when you can write it now and release it much later! Hey, it worked to MY advantage because now I can have something ready for the 10th anniversary of the series.

Budget for this was aproximately 1,310.05 Mexican pesos, which translates to 66.47 dollars (DONATE TO ME). I had my computer ready, I had my trusty ol' Wix site that nobody reads, I was prepared.

I presented the idea to my brother and mother (They both didn't give a shit), and this is what they said, my brother said "Dude, you're gonna be reviewing the comic where Gwen Stacy is Deadpool? Fuck that." and my mother said this upon seeing the cover for Gwenpool #5, "Why does Gwenpool look like a character from something that you shouldn't be reading?" Needless to say, they both were very interested in this project and they both supported me throughout the writing process, which I shall describe... Right now.

Coming up with the original title was piss easy, just make up a false claim and use that! Renaming the post was more challenging but hey, at least I have a new series to promote.

PRODUCTION AND REVIEWING:

Writing for this began on June 19th, 2024. Believe it or not, I had already read the very first 10 issues or so of this series, but I still re-read them because I can never say no to re-reading a comic that I really enjoyed. + I had to write recaps, and I had to make sure they were all accurate with absolutely 0 oversights.

Some of my inspirations for this post were the Nostalgia Critic Review for Surf Ninjas, Alex Lennen and his many videos about aspects of Spider-Man's story. Some of my motivations were "What if my favorite youtubers, singers, writers, actors, and what if Gwenpool herself were to read this?" It is very unlikely, but it could potentially happen, scientists are working on a way to bring Gwen back to the real world.

My original plan was to exaggerate what my thoughts on the comic were and making it seem like this was my favorite of all time, but it just became a retrospective with maybe a corny joke or a witty comment, and a mockery of everything.

I was having a bunch of fun writing the recaps, and you can tell that I started going more into detail as I was writing the recaps for issues 4, 5, and beyond. Part of me was debating whether or not to recap the stories of Gwenpool Strikes Back all over again, but instead of suffering, I just made lazy 2 sentence recaps while insulting the book.

I think the biggest challenges of the review were reviewing Story Arc #4 and reviewing Love Unlimited. I had purchased a Marvel Unlimited subscription in order to review that Wasp series, and I thought "Well, now I can actually review Love Unlimited", and let me tell ya, I have never had so much fun making fun of a comic book. I mean, yes, it's a great comic, but some scenes are just absolutely ridiculous. Thanks, Jeremy Whitley.

One of the many jokes that I came up with for the sake of the post was "Y'know what this reminds me of?" where I compare a certain aspect of the story to some random Spider-Man thing.

Y'wanna know how I read vol. 4 of the TPB? First of all, I remembered that this was the only TPB I didn't have on my Google Play Books page, second of all, I remembered the time I was a piracy junkie and had a PDF saved deep within one of my many Google Drive accounts. THIRD OF ALL, I saved up enough money for a physical copy. The end.

I originally wanted to make the post with chapters, an intro, comic recap, and review, but instead I just made it a long rambling that doesn't really add to anything but hey, at least I had fun making it.

Halfway through the writing progress, I thought "Shit, I'm hungry", so I went for a burger or something.

2/3 of the way through, I thought about something that hasn't really been brought up by anyone, so I put it on the extended review because I was too lazy to log into Wix again. In fact, the Wix review is full of oversights that aren't on the Blogspot version because the Wix site is now obsolete, and I do not bother with revising oversights on posts.

After like 6,000 words, I started to wonder what I was gonna do after I was done with the post, and that is how I came up with the idea of REWARDING myself after every good post. For example:

- When I was done with 4 Random Issues of Fantastic Four, I rewarded myself with a new FF Trade Paperback.

- When I was done with the first parts of JMS Spidey, I got myself issues 40 and 46.

What did I get for this post? The Thunderbolts burger.

Oh shit, I think that was meant for post-production. Anyway.

During production, I hired a professional yeller to pressure me into finishing the post before the deadline but considering how I set the deadline to like 1 year in the future, I would've probably finished the post before the deadline anyway, and I did.

One thing I definitely do not regret is adding all the Weird Al references, some were funny, some were not as funny. But if I ever have to make a video version of my blog posts, and I make one for this one, I'll definitely add this clip of Al at the very end.

POST-PRODUCTION AND RELEASE:

The post was done, I mean, I still did a little revision here or there, sometimes a big revision, but I just did what I do worst, and that is promote this post.

I wanted to mislead people, again, I made people play this game where they had to guess the comic in the title (before I changed it) and I was surprised when people got it right, I mean, it's crazy, it's almost like this comic is critically acclaimed or something.

This is not a movie or even a video thing of some sorts, but I still wanted to have like a red carpet world premiere, so I rented an entire theatre and got 100,000 people to buy seats and listen to me recite the entirety of the post.

I also made a playlist with most of the music I listened to while writing the post.

Well, y'know, I didn't do much for post-production so here's a list of important events that happened between writing the post and actually releasing it:

  • I wrote like an entire post debunking a ship. And then I did it again.
  • The announcement of Robert Downey Jr. as Dr. Doom.
  • 8 Deaths of Spider-Man.
  • Rek-Rap dying and coming back to life.
  • I saw the My Hero Academia movie in theaters.
  • 4 Year Anniversary of Spider-Plush.
  • I made my Tumblr.
  • I moved to Blogspot.
  • I got blocked by Emi Jones.
  • Marvel Rivals released.
  • The 2024 US Presidential Elections.
  • The release of Sonic The Hedgehog 3.
  • Episode 50 of Ask The Sonic Heroes by SonicSong182.
  • Marvel Rivals added the Fantastic Four.
  • The Fantastic Four movie trailer.
  • Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man released.
  • "Weird Al" Yankovic announced his Bigger and Weirder tour.

  • Our first 2 interviews. (Dreaded and skull902)
  • I read Spider-Man: Blue.
  • I turned 18.

That's about it, I may have missed a bunch of stuff, like important world events and such.

I came up with the idea of releasing the post at midnight because... That's when I release all of my posts, shut up.

Clicking "schedule post" was a huge effort that took over a year of exercise and preparation, I changed my entire diet in order to click something with my mouse.
