The End of Coming Home (Review)
Well, it's the end of the beginning for the J. Michael Straczynski run on the Amazing Spider-Man. Last time, Spidey fought Morlun and lost. Now he's going to irradiate himself in order to defeat Morlun, hey, it's a win/win situation, he either dies or he defeats Morlun. Well, let's see how this story ends by looking at issue 35 of the Amazing Spider-Man (vol. 2) by J. Michael Straczynski and John Romita Jr.
The cover (by J. Scott Campbell) is actually more creative than the ones we've seen in the last 4 issues. Spidey's costume on the floor of Peter's room, where he pretty much can't keep anything off the fucking floor, look, this place is a mess, there's books, web shooters, and a toothbrush. C'mon, Peter, keep your shit together. The comic begins, Morlun is about to find Peter so he can eat him. Meanwhile, Peter is experimenting with dangerous radioactive material to make his blood not pure. Morlun is getting closer, so Spidey decides to inject radioactivity onto his blood... As one does. He passes out on the floor, there he is, defenseless.
Morlun finds Pete's body and tries to eat it, but guess what, HE CAN'T, PETER IS RADIOACTIVE and trying to eat his spider power while he's radioactive isn't exactly ideal. He's NOT pure anymore. The spider that bit him could've been blah-blah-blah, it doesn't matter anymore, Spider-Man was made, and he's here to stay. Morlun is about to die in Spidey's hands, but Spider-Man doesn't kill, but if he doesn't kill Morlun then he's just gonna hurt someone else... WHATEVER SHALL HE DO?!?!
Morlun's sidekick whose name is unknown to me shows up and shoots Morlun, killing him. He talks to Spidey for like 5 seconds about how Morlun hurt him a lot and Spidey's like "You better scramble like an egg before you get folded like an omelet."
Later in the story, we get the iconic page where Peter asks God if he could stop making his life a hell. After that, Spidey goes to Ezekiel's place to see if he survived... He sees footprints on the windows and a fake spider... He's alive. Aw man, Peter is SO happy, he loves everything, the WORLD is beautiful, the CITY is beautiful, the STREETS are beautiful, I'M beautiful, my MONITOR is beautiful, SUE STORM is beautiful, everything's beautiful.
It looks like Peter's gonna sleep for a WEEK now. He doesn't even care that he dropped his costume on the ground for everyone that walks into his room to find... And whaddya know? Aunt May comes in to pick up Pete's dirty ugly clothes, and she finds the Spidey suit. The end.
This comic and this storyline are INCREDIBLE. I've read it like 5 times now and I'm just so impressed by how good this is. The story is great, there's lots of action and interesting commentary, the art is beautiful, I like how the drawings look, and I like the colors a lot. 10/10. JMS and JRJR did a great job with this one.
Well, the storyline is over, but the JMS run is only just beginning, I'll be looking at the other issues soon...
You wanna hear something I noticed about this run? There are no annuals, no spin-offs, and a total of 2 stories that overlapped across like 2 Spidey titles. (The Other & One More Day)
NEXT: Unknown.
