Spidey, J. Michael Straczynski, and John Romita Jr. have done it again! Here I am, looking at the JMS Spider-Man run again.... But before that, I want to give my 2 cents on a debate that has been going on for decades...
Are comic books sexist? Yes, definitely.
Anyway, here is issue 51 of The Amazing Spider-Man (vol. 2)
This is the cover by J. Scott Campbell, it looks alright, there is one small oversight... Well, there's plenty I could mention, but look at Spidey in the background, either Spidey is really tall or that building is really small. That being said, composition-wise, I like this cover, after all the covers that are just Spider-Man doing a cool pose, it's kinda refreshing to see something different for a change.Okay, the story is titled "Digger", clearly the plot is about Spider-Man & Mary Jane buying shovels and defiling graves.
PROLOGUE: Way back in 1957, a gamma bomb went off, a guy was accidentally caught in the blast and is now a big green rage monster. This story may seem familiar to you, but it is actually completely different from Marvel's OTHER green rage monster.
THE PRESENT... Or the past, seeing how this comic released 22 years ago. Peter Parker and Mary Jane are having a hot date. Scratch that, a security guard gets killed by some unknown thing. Meanwhile, Spider-Man is talking to himself (again) about how happy he is that Mary Jane is back in New York.
MEANWHILE. Some mob shit is going on, all of these mobsters work for the big guy, Mister Forelli. Digger suddenly shows up and tries to kill some of Forelli's employees and destroys the building where they were located. Well, that's another building down in New York City in the early 2000's.
Remember that Lamont guy from issue 41? He's back, and along with Spider-Man, he starts investigating this green guy. I mean, it shouldn't be hard to find a giant green dude, it's not like this guy can just put on a trench coat and blend in... So, the next few panels show Digger blending in while wearing a trench coat... That being said, it doesn't last very long because he starts attacking people at a club. Luckily Spider-Man shows up to stop him... In the next issue.
Let me guess... He's gonna lose ONE time and then try to figure out how to beat him and succeed the next time with his newfound knowledge of the weakness of this dude. I know how these Spider-Man comics and pretty much everything else he's in work.
That being said, this issue was pretty enjoyable and fun. I give it an 8/10.
Time for the next issue.
Again, composition-wise, this cover is pretty damn good, but I just do not enjoy much of J. Scott Campbell's early stuff... Nor do I enjoy much of his more modern stuff, but he has his moments.
This issue begins with Digger fighting against Spider-Man while trashing the entire fucking place. Spidey doesn't lose brutally like he did with Morlun that one time.
Spidey meets some other mafia dude, and they both go to this OTHER mafia dude's house for a very special offer. Oh, and getting on top of a moving car is illegal, one of the many things I found out reading Spider-Man comics. Honestly, it makes a lot of sense.
This Forelli dude wanted to meet Spider-Man because he is willing to pay him 10,000 dollars for Spider-Man to protect him from Digger. Oh, and Spider-Man also meets Forelli's daughter, Lynne, who is actually taller than Spider-Man. I'd tell you what else happens, but the next page has not loaded yet. I'm waiting.
Whatever, Spider-Man is getting paid 10,000 dollars a day to work for the mob... I should do that too! Thank you, Spidey, you absolute role model for the young people of the world! He talks to Forelli, at a place where Digger just sank a ship with imported goods.
The comics code authority is gonna love this... So, anyway, Spidey goes to a place where they're testing gamma bombs to find the corpses of the people we saw on issue 51. He sneaks in with a radiation suit or whatever the fuck and he finds... Digger, who walked all the way to this testing site through the sewers.
The issue ends, the story is to be concluded. 8/10 because... It's the same shit as the last issue, just your regular part 2 from any storyline in any form of media.
Cover has Spidey swinging, a huge setback, but we'll let it slide. Thanks, JRJR.
Spidey chills with MJ for a bit before he finds out Digger is assaulting another place, so Peter suits up and starts beating the shit out of Digger for like the second time in this storyline. But then Forelli's guys show up and start shooting Digger... Before he snaps and destroys ANOTHER building in NYC. The guys tell Spidey that they're glad that he's part of the team now... Shit, he's gonna be real pissed...
And real pissed he is, because he starts threatening Forelli and raises his own salary like the absolute role model he is.
The issue ends with Forelli reflecting on how his life as a mobster is affecting his daughter's life...
Well, this issue ended on a kind of sad note. Don't know how to feel about Forelli... Still, this issue was great. 9/10. Spider-Man acts a little bit out of character but it is justified at the end of the storyline, I mean, you try staying in character while working for the mob.
Next issue.
This cover was drawn by artists Terry & Rachel Dodson, who is like Frank Cho, but less perverted. You may remember the Dodsons as the people that drew things like Trouble, and Marvel Knights: Spider-Man, and also the people that drew the covers for that fucking piece of shit (Gwenpool Strikes Back 1-4).Spider-Man enters a lab and gives an autograph to someone after analyzing Digger's DNA. I could make a joke about how Digger's name could lead to someone accidentally saying the N word, but the letter N is on a completely different key than the letter D.... Honestly, keyboards make me wonder what life would be like without the QWERTY system and- LET'S TALK ABOUT SPIDER-MAN.
Next morning, Spider-Man is eating breakfast shirtless, it's okay for him because he's muscular, but not okay for me because I am a fat fuck that will never
Peter goes to Forelli's house to tell him that perhaps he should leave his home if Digger knows where he lives, so Forelli leaves, and Digger starts attacking the place, luckily, Spider-Man fights back but Petey boy is now stronger this time, Digger tries to go to the sewers before he finally dies.
Well, Forelli is caught by the police, Digger is dead, Peter has his money and now he is using that money to fund the Gwen Stacy Memorial Library, how sweet. Spidey has done money laundering.
As pointed out by a smarter and more handsome reviewer (Spidermad on Spiderfan.org), Straczynski's storylines end way better than they started, I happen to agree, this ending was pretty satisfying and... Great, which is more than we can say for that fucking piece of shit (GSB 1-4). So, yes, this issue was pretty good, 9/10.
The storyline's over, but the post isn't.
This is the cover, once again, Spider-Man doing something cool... Except it looks actually cool! This one was drawn up by artist Mike Deodato Jr., a guy whose art is... Eh, kinda mixed for me, sometimes Spider-Man looks like he has muscles on his muscles.Should be noted that this issue and the next one have multiple writers, Fiona Avery (credited as Fiona Kelly on Marvel.com) and JMS.
Bunch of kids are running late, and Peter offers to help a girl with a broken leg, which makes them both end up late. The school day ends up going as usual (with Peter looking into the girl's student record to find out that she's not doing too well). Peter offers to help the girl whose name is Melissa and they both go to her home, on the way, they both stop a bunch of thugs.
At Melissa's home, he meets her mother, oh, and this is where Peter finds out that Melissa's brother is actually one of the guys that Spider-Man helped capture.
Later that night, Peter and MJ are at another date. Okay.
Spider-Man stops a street gang and meets a guy named Hugh Benjamin Muller, a landlord that paid thugs to try to get a tenant to pay him, which is an action that I wouldn't put past a landlord in real life.
He thinks about the current events as of late, but Ezekiel is there... Somehow looking way older, and like a hunk of shit, and tells Spider-Man about the unintended consequences or whatever.
He goes to check on Melissa and the issue ends.
Well, Fiona Kelly and JMS are up to something here! Finally something that isn't magic and doesn't take up to 3 issues! 9/10.
NEEEEXTTT!!!
Well, if you told me that this was the cover for issue 1, I'd believe you.Peter has to talk to Melissa after school. Okay, this is the big confrontation. Maybe, Peter was the guy that... Gave her brother a bad grade, making him not able to not get a job and joining street gangs. No, that wasn't the case.
That being said, Spidey is now secretly babysitting Melissa, making her NOT look at the scenery in NYC through the fire escape and shit.
Peter goes to find ANOTHER damn gang, but he finds Ezekiel, who was the founder of this damn gang. Oh, and Spidey wasn't actually gonna arrest the gang members, but instead he finds Mel's brother and gives him a job opportunity.
He talks to MJ about it and we get a flashback to a scene we didn't see where Mel and her brother reunite and Peter hears the news that definitely didn't involve him.
Well, that story sure ended on a really happy note. And it was pretty enjoyable! thanks, Fiona and JMS! 10/10.
That's it.
Say, you wanna know what's next? Do you? Well, next on the schedule is the BIRTHDAY POST. What am I gonna be looking at? Well, more of this shit.
